I am back home in Boston after an epic nine day adventure in the Pacific Northwest and in Whistler BC Canada. Over the next few weeks, I will be releasing a few short films I shot while on my vacation. This is the first installment. It has been way too long since I have shot like this, so expect more of these short subjects to be posted soon. I loved my time on this corner of the world.

I shot this video with the Canon 5dmk2 DSLR at 1080p 30p. I used three lenses, the Canon 15mm f2.8 fisheye, a Canon 24mm f1.4 wide angle and the Canon 65mm f2.8 zooming macro lens. I only had the camera with me, no tripod. I wedged rocks and sticks under the camera body to keep the shot steady. The slug moved very slow, so this was not a problem.

The very first shot of this video was taken from the roof of my rental car as I drive down an abandoned logging road in a Redwood grove in northern California. I simply set my exposure, hit record, placed the camera LCD side down on the top of the car and rolled very slow down the road. I used the car as a dolly!

While walking down a hiking trail, I nearly stepped on a huge yellow slug. At first, the slimy six inch long creature was not moving at all. It took a few minutes for the slug to get use to the camera lens half an inch away from its body.

The tight shots of the Banana slug were taken with the super sick Canon MP-E 65mm f2.8 macro lens. This lens is a zooming macro. The focus barrel is not for focus, but for magnification. To focus, you must physically move the lens closer or farther away from the tiny subject. It is very challenging to shoot video with this lens. Every little shake is amplified and the focus is literally as narrow as a human hair.

I graded the footage using the 3-way color correction effect in Final Cut Pro. I crushed the blacks, brought up the mids and upped the saturation. All zooms were done digitally in post.

At the bottom of this page, I am offering an HD version of this short film in Apple Pro Res 422. Enjoy this slug in full high definition. The file is 1.5 GB so it will take a while!
