A non-profit organization out of Newport, Rhode Island asked me to cover their annual sailing regatta on Narragansett Bay.
Shake-A-Leg comes to the aid of disabled people of all ages and works to gain them independence and also helps them to adapt and overcome obstacles in society. This 14th annual regatta is part of Shake-A-Legs premier adaptive sailing and therapy programs.
The regatta featured famed former America’s Cup skippers and seven of the America’s Cup vintage racing yachts.
I shot this project over a two day period. The first day was cold and heavy rains fell with stiff winds. I used a storm cover on my Sony HDR-Z1U camera and tried to keep the lens dry and the shot steady. Large swells and the strong winds made this very difficult.
Day two brought bright blue skies with clouds rolling in during the afternoon. The winds were less powerful and the seas were calm.
I was the only camera operator on this project and I shot with one physical camera. I added some color saturation during post with the Magic Bullet Looks vignette film style MisFire effect.
Field audio was as simple as a camera mounted shotgun mic on the yachts and a Sony ECM-77b lav on the shore during the interviews.
