I was asked to produce, shoot and edit a DVD project for a woman in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts. The purpose of this DVD was to be sent in with a portfolio for a modeling career after the age of 40. It had to be exactly 3 minutes long.

Cheryl entered a contest put on by a New York based women’s magazine titled “More”. It called on any woman between the ages of 40 and 51 to talk about life and model for the magazine.

Cheryl was chosen out of 1,400 of applicants and as a top fifty prospect, she needed a three minute video produced to show off her life after year 40.

This was my very first video edited with Final Cut Pro. I used two cameras for the sit down interview. The wide show was the Sony HDR-Z1U HDV camera and the tight show was the Sony consumer HVR-HC3 HDV cmos camera.

I used color correction on the windows and over saturated the video with a filter in FCP. I used Magic Bullet Looks for the MisFire vignette on the edges of the frame.

I lit the sit down interview with six lights. The key was a 1k Lowel DP with a Chimera soft box. I inserted a 45 degree honeycomb on the box to control spill. I used a battery operated light on a c-stand for the back light. There is a Lowel Tota light on a dimmer knocked down to about 10 percent out of frame to the right warming up the side of the piano. Finally, there are three other 500 watt Lowel DP lights working the background. You can see the “torch” effect I got from one of them on the extreme left of frame in the wide shot.

As for that room Cheryl is sitting in, it is about 10 feet by 8 feet! The wide and tight cameras are set up in a doorway and the edges of the door trim are just out of frame on the left and right in the wide shot.

I made a cameo in this video (not the ass over her right shoulder). When Cheryl speaks about exercise, pause the second shot in the gym sequence. As Cheryl works her shoulders, you can see me in the reflection of the mirror in the background. I am shooting off the hip with the Sony Z1U.

Unfortunately, Cheryl did not make the finals but her life will continue to catch fire as she lives it to the fullest.
